What is an executive functioning disorder?

Executive functioning disorders can be developmental or acquired. For some, difficulty with executive functioning begins in childhood; for others, a brain injury can create new challenges. The term "executive functioning" refers to various cognitive skills required for engagement and success in daily life such as:

  • Being able to focus on a task

  • Remembering and recalling information

  • Being able to tune out distractions

  • The ability to refrain from acting on impulse

  • Organizing and prioritizing tasks

  • Self-monitoring -- reviewing mistakes, fixing errors, etc.

  • Setting goals and making a plan

  • Anticipating the actions of yourself or others

  • Managing problems or complex decisions

  • Regulating emotions

Difficulties with executive functioning can result in frustration, self-doubt, poor performance at work or school, and challenges in social situations. It is never too late to improve executive functioning skills.

What do we focus on in therapy?

Executive functioning therapy aims to help you become more successful and independent in your personal, academic, and work life. Here are some common areas that I help clients with:

  • Attention- Focus on what is important to complete preferred and less preferred activities.

  • Visualization- Create mental images to process information that you hear or read.

  • Memory- Identify strategies to remember information or compensate for challenges.

  • Self-awareness- Recognize actions or behaviors that may negatively impact daily performance.

  • Goal setting and planning- Make personal, academic, or career goals and learn ways to reach them.

  • Self-monitoring and mental flexibility- Monitor performance, anticipate the perspectives of others, and make adjustments as necessary.

  • Decision-making and problem-solving- Recognize a problem, identify the possible causes, and analyze the best possible solutions.

When working with children and teens, I dedicate time to educating parents on how to support their child's executive functioning skill development at home.

We will start with an initial evaluation

Services begin with an initial evaluation to identify each client's executive functioning strengths and weaknesses.

Evaluations include a combination of standardized assessments, questionnaires, interviews, observations, and therapy trials. The evaluation process looks different for everyone and depends on a client's age, concerns, and goals.

You will receive a detailed report of my findings along with recommendations for therapy.

Work on what matters most to you

Therapy for executive functioning focuses on building skills that you or your child needs to be successful in daily life. I combine evidence-based approaches with real-life scenarios to support each client in meeting their individual goals.

For children and teens, parent or caregiver involvement is essential for making sure that new skills are carried over into day-to-day life. Therapy is a marathon, not a sprint, so my goal is to help the whole family have reasonable expectations and effectively support one another along the way.

reach your goals from anywhere online

Virtual therapy sessions allow you to skip the commute and participate in therapy at home.

During each session, I will check in on how things are going, listen to any problems you've encountered, and help you use strategies to overcome barriers. All therapy activities will be tailored to help you achieve success and independence.

With children and teens, parents are strongly encouraged to email or call me in advance to share any issues or areas that they would like addressed in therapy.
